Slavemasters are acting with impunity because many police officers as well as the public do not take their crimes seriously enough, Britain’s anti-slavery tsar has said.

Complacency about the nature and scale of human trafficking means slavery has become an accepted feature of everyday life in car washes, nail bars, building sites and farmers’ fields across the country, according to Kevin Hyland, the independent anti-slavery commissioner.
